Water Heater and Drain Questions, Answered
Straight answers to the questions Woodstock and Cumming homeowners actually ask us, in plain language, with no sales pitch attached.

Questions we hear on every kind of visit
The answers below are the same answers we give on site, in the same plain terms. Where an answer depends on what we find at your house, we say so, because a confident answer about a pipe nobody has seen is not an answer at all. For pricing factors across all services, see the cost guide. For booking, see the contact page or call (770) 555-0100.

Drain cleaning questions
Why does the same drain slow down again after it was just cleared?
A drain that clears and then slows again usually has an underlying cause the last clearing missed. Grease coats a kitchen line and narrows it, hair and soap build a mat in a bathroom line, and roots grow back through a yard line joint. A camera run shows which one it is, and that finding decides whether another cleaning will hold or whether the pipe itself needs attention. See our Woodstock home page for the full drain approach.
Should I use a chemical drain cleaner before calling?
Chemical cleaners rarely clear a real blockage, and they can damage fixtures and make the line unpleasant and unsafe to work on afterward. They also hide the symptom without showing the cause. If a drain is slow, stop pouring chemicals in it and describe the pattern when you call: which fixtures are affected, and whether the problem moves when other fixtures run.
What is the difference between cable cleaning and jetting?
A cable machine cuts through a soft blockage and pulls material back out, which suits many bathroom and branch line clogs. Jetting uses pressurized water to scour the pipe wall, which suits grease or scale that coats a long run. A cable can punch a hole through a grease plug while leaving most of the coating in place, so a greasy line often needs jetting to stay clear. We choose based on what comes back on the cable and how the line drains after a pass.
My whole house is backing up. Is that urgent?
Yes. A backup through a low shower or floor drain means the main line is blocked, so every additional flush or running tap makes it worse. Shut off running water, stop flushing, and keep people clear of any standing water. Call and say water is backing up now, so we can prioritize the visit.
Do you clean drains in Cumming as well as Woodstock?
Yes. Drain cleaning support for Cumming homes is covered on our Cumming page. Cumming drain patterns overlap with Woodstock's: roots from oaks and pines, red clay soil movement on yard line joints, and grease or scale inside the house lines. We bring the same camera-first approach to Cumming visits when a problem repeats or the cause is unclear.
Water heater questions

How do I know whether my water heater needs replacing?
Look at the symptom, not just the age. A leak from the tank body, rusty hot water that clears on the cold tap, and heavy rumbling from sediment all point toward replacement. A failed element, a faulty thermostat, or a tripped reset can leave a house with no hot water while the tank body is still sound, and those are repairs. We check the unit on site before giving a verdict. The full decision process is on our water heater replacement page.
What size water heater does my house need?
It depends on how your household uses hot water at its busiest, not on square footage alone. How many showers run at once? Is there a large soaking tub? Does laundry run while people shower? A tank is sized by storage plus recovery, and a tankless unit is sized by flow at winter incoming water temperature. Tell us about the morning rush and we will size from that. See water heater installation for the full sizing discussion.
What does a water heater warranty actually cover?
Tank warranties usually come as 6 or 12 year manufacturer options, and the longer option usually reflects a different internal build. Ask what is covered: the tank itself, parts, labor, or some combination, because those are different values. Keep the model, serial number, and installation date recorded, since any future claim will ask for them.
How often should a tank be flushed, and what is an anode rod?
Flushing sediment on a schedule keeps scale from building up and making the unit work harder and noisier. The anode rod is the sacrificial part inside the tank that protects the steel from corrosion. When the rod is gone, the tank itself starts corroding. We show you both during an installation or replacement visit, so maintenance becomes a known routine.
Is a tankless unit right for my house?
It depends on gas supply, venting, and winter flow demand. A tankless burner at full fire consumes gas at a rate no standard tank burner approaches, so the gas line must be checked. Venting must match the unit's requirements. And the unit must be sized for winter, when incoming water is coldest, and for simultaneous use. If a single unit cannot honestly cover the house, we say so before installation. See our tankless water heater page.
Sewer line questions

How do I know whether my sewer line needs replacing or just cleaning?
The camera decides. Roots, bellies, offsets, cracks, and collapses each point to a different fix. A line that keeps blocking after repeated cleanings is often a pipe that has failed, not a cleaning done badly. Roots grow back, bellies keep collecting, and offsets keep catching. We show you the footage and explain what it means before recommending a replacement. See sewer line replacement for the full picture.
What is trenchless sewer repair, and when does it not work?
Trenchless methods avoid a full open trench along the whole run. Lining forms a new pipe within the old one and suits a pipe that still holds its shape. Bursting draws a new pipe through the old line. Neither method corrects a severe belly, since a liner takes the shape of the pipe it lines, and neither fits every access situation. An open trench is the honest answer for a collapsed pipe, for a grade that must be corrected, or for access that rules out a trenchless pull.
Will a sewer replacement destroy my yard?
The surface impact depends on the method and the access points. Trenchless work disturbs far less surface than an open trench, but it still needs entry and exit points. An open trench disturbs the ground along its line, and backfill and restoration must be handled properly or the ground will settle. We walk the line with you before digging, mark what will be disturbed, and agree on the restoration plan before work starts.
Who is responsible for the sewer line, me or the city?
The camera shows it and the crew confirms on site. We trace where the line runs, where the failure sits, and what portion is yours to fix, before any digging or lining starts. If the problem turns out to be beyond your line, we will tell you that too, because replacing pipe that is not yours is not a fix.
Leak detection support questions
How do I know if I have a hidden leak?
The common signs are a water meter that moves with every fixture off, damp spots that do not dry, a warm patch on a floor near a hot line, and a water bill pattern that changes without a change in use. Note when the symptom appeared and whether it changes with fixture use, and tell us that history when you call. It narrows the search faster than any tool alone.
Do you handle leak detection as a standalone service?
Leak detection is a support service for us, not a standalone money page. When a leak traces to a water heater connection, a drain, or a sewer line within our scope, we fix it within that scope. Some leak situations, particularly slab leaks and hidden supply leaks that need specialized locating equipment, belong with a dedicated leak specialist, and we will say so when the evidence points that way rather than pretending a general look is a location.
What should I do first if I suspect a leak?
Check whether the water meter moves with everything off, and note where any dampness is. If water is actively pooling or damaging floors or walls, shut off the water to the affected area if you can do so safely, and call promptly. Do not open walls or dig up a yard line searching for the source. Locating the leak correctly first saves more damage than a fast guess.
General questions

Where do you work?
Woodstock in Cherokee County, our home base, and Cumming in Forsyth County, our footprint market. The areas hub covers both towns. We do not serve towns beyond those two at launch, because a short service area keeps response times honest.
Do you give upfront pricing?
Yes. Once we have seen the unit, the line, or the camera footage, we give a price for a defined scope before work starts. If we find something new mid-job, you hear about it before we do the extra work. The factors that move a price are laid out on the cost guide.
How quickly can you come out?
We aim to get a technician to you the same day you call. That is an aim stated honestly, not a guarantee dressed up as one. When you call, we will tell you what to expect and what to do while you wait if water is backing up or a tank is leaking.
Do you do general plumbing work beyond water heaters, drains, and sewer lines?
No. We do not do general plumbing beyond water heaters, drains, and sewer lines. That narrow scope is deliberate, and it keeps the crew sharp on exactly the problems this site describes. If your problem sits outside our scope, we will tell you plainly.
What should I include when I contact you?
Which town you are in, which fixtures or units are involved, how long the problem has been building, and what has been tried before. A photo of a water heater label helps enormously, since the model and capacity are right there on it. If water is backing up or a tank is leaking, say so first. Booking details are on the contact page.
